Is Barack Obama the Antichrist?

...and even now is already in the world.
…and even now is already in the world.

Is Barack Obama the Antichrist?

No.

He is not.

This is one of those conversations I wish we didn’t even need to be having. Yet here we are. I can’t believe the amount of hatred I’ve seen directed against President Obama. And yes, I’ve seen many accuse him of being the Antichrist.

But he’s not. In fact, the Bible barely makes mention of any single person being a mega-villain, end of the world, apocalyptic Antichrist. There is one paragraph in 2 Thessalonians that refers to the “man of lawlessness” but it is vague in typical apocalyptic style and is not even close to a description of President Obama.

For the most part, the supervillain antichrist is the stuff of Christian fiction (that means it’s made up out of a writer’s imagination as opposed to non-fiction which is literature that is true, like history, biography, science, etc.). It’s not even good Christian fiction at that. It gives us this image of Nicolae, a super-evil dude who is the epitome of all things evil who ushers in the end of the world and the eventual reign of Christ.

Fiction.

Not real.

The Bible does talk about antichrist, but probably not in the way you think:

Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist – he denies the Father and the Son. (1 John 2:18, 22)

John did not consider there to be a single cataclysmic figure, but established that many who oppose Christ are already in the world. Rather than a personal villain, John sees the antichrist as anyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ (Anointed One or Messiah). If that’s our criteria for antichrist then John was right – many antichrists have come. And I’m sure many more will come.

John continues:

Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. (1 John 4:3)

We don’t have to wait for the antichrist to come. It’s not some far-off distant event. John said nearly 2000 years ago that the spirit was already in the world. Stop waiting for that apocalyptic, Hollywood villain.

Now as to Mr. Obama specifically – he has publically declared that he is a Christian, a believer in Jesus. If he is not denying that Jesus is Christ then Mr. Obama cannot be the antichrist. It seems like pretty clear logic to me.

So what is our beef with Mr. Obama? It seems that we’ve taken our political animosity and clothed it in religious terms and ideas. We’re not happy with how he runs the government. We’re not content with his direction and vision for the future. So we take our political unrest and couch it in apocalyptic language. This is detrimental on several levels:

  1. It does not allow for genuine political discourse. Any time someone uses the God-card it immediately shuts down conversation. I knew a guy one time who told me that God told him that he was supposed to leave our college and move to the northwest. What can you say to that? “No, God didn’t tell you that.” The God-card is a conversation ender. It’s used by angry, political Christians. Instead, let’s actually talk about ideas and policies. Let’s use our words to express why we are upset about the vision and direction of the government. Then let’s use our citizenship to affect change through our voting.
  2. It perpetuates bad theology. The Bible never talks about a single antichrist villain. The idea that there is one big baddie who is the binary opposite to Jesus is bad theology. There is no power that is equal to God. The idea of polar opposites is dualism. It’s not Christian faith. Instead of looking for one person to usher in the end of the world, let’s focus on living kingdom lives here and now. Jesus preached, “Change your way of thinking, for the kingdom of heaven is here and now.”
  3. It damages Christian credibility in this world. How can people take us seriously if we’re running off at the mouth putting spiritual villain labels on any politician we don’t like?

We have to take Mr. Obama at his word when he says that he is a Christian. Who are we to disagree? We don’t know his heart or his relationship with God. Stop using faith as a catapult for your political ammo.

Is Barack Obama the antichrist.

No. He is not.

  1. Just imagine if Christians spent less time arguing about piddly stuff like this and more time building each other up and encouraging and helping each other through things , there would actually be fewer denominations and maybe even some unity in the church as a whole, then maybe the world would not see a bunch of hypocrites but would actually see Christ in all we do. Then the church wouldn’t have to use any gimmicks or fancy things to get people to hear the gospel, they would actually see Christ in us and be drawn

  2. again another sign obama is the antichrist. he has aligned himself with iran .allowing them the freedom to get a nuclear weapon.just last week iran swore to wipe is real off the face of the east. also iran called the use a weak broke country. so what does obama do,drop some of the sanctions against iran. thus obama has turned his back on our friends the jews once again. if Isreal bombs iran ,which obama has left them no other option, this would mean world war three. and the valley of Armageddon is in isreal, its called ito,or mito(my spelling is probably wrong).these are all signs in the bible. which some people don’t care to follow the signs,or just turn there back to the signs.if you are not watching fox news, you need to start watching them.they are the only news channel that tells all the news and all the truth about the news.please christians look for the signs, they are there to see if you want to find them. all this is good for us saved christians because it means the rapture can come at anytime. so make sure you are right with god. i hate to dis agree with the pastor but this is a site clearly to cover for obama, whether the pastors know it or not.he will not address the signs from the bible, and they are there. next as everyone is already talking about is obama becoming a world leader. in a way obama already has pulled of a miracle .7 years ago obama was no one. he is admitted drug user, then suddenly after 1 term as a senator,he president of united states, making him the most powerful person in the world. there is a lot of real proof that barry(obamas real first name) was not even a citizen of the united states. one of arizonas sheriff spent a lot of man hours and took obamas birth certificate apart,he proofed it is a fake. i could go on and on and tell you real hard facts of the signs pointing to obama being the antichrist.i agree its not 100% he is,but i would be willing to bet its a good 90% that he is the antichrist. again reader ask the pastor why he won’t address the signs. its because he can’t,because they are all fact. please keep your eyes on obama. we are definitely in the end times.be right with god.

    1. I will be happy to address any signs you want to talk about from the Bible. The “signs” you mention are not biblical signs. You might be unhappy with the President’s politics and policies, but that does not make him the Antichrist.

Once President Obama’s term is over he will become like every other former president – he will do speaking engagements, perhaps write a book, and advise other politicians and presidents. You give him too much weight.

And I will go on the record as saying that we are always in the “end times.” We were 2000 years ago. We are now. We will be 500 years from now.

  3. yes pastor he is worshipped. jamine fox said calls obama our savior and lord. no matter what obama does these people do worship him. you need to look to see it pastor(i don’t believe you are). you make no reference to the signs either. there is really nothing you can say though is there?because they are true and accurate. all i can tell you is to start listening to these movies on the internet.the ones when obama quotes the bible and blasphemies god. i am curious what religion are you pastor?you say you have to be good and work hard to get to heaven. are you johova witness (don’t know if its spelled right). i have always thought that you have to believe that jesus died on the cross for our sins to get in heaven? anyways pastor it seems that you made it to where i could only reply to you(thats ok i planted enough seed to where maybe 1 other person will look for themselves). i am starting to think you are a obama supporter and you are only trying to put out the flames of truth. why won’t you answer the questions about the signs. god as left a lot of messages and signs to people to see through the centuries. like the burning bush god talked to moses through. the antichrist is not able to work miracles(only his trance like message). but he is able to make people follow as if he was there god. if you look on the internet there is so much proof people are worshipping obama. anyways i could type until my fingers turn blue. `pastor please just look out for who you protecting. by keeping others from following these signs you may be sending a lot of people down the path you are taking. there are a lot of false profits(if i am spelling it right). since my angel experience(she never told me anything) i have a real quick since about folks. god bless you pastor.

    1. People like President Obama but he is not “worshipped.” He has never blasphemed God. I am a Christian pastor who did not vote for the President – I am simply tired of people demonizing him. I never said you can work your way to heaven – we are saved only by grace through faith. And the man of lawlessness will do miracles – read Thessalonians.

    1. I don’t take any offense or disrespect 🙂 The Bible says that the spirit of antichrist denies that Jesus is Christ. President Obama, though he may not act the way many Christians want him to, has never denied Jesus as the Christ. Thessalonians tells us that the Man of Lawlessness will perform miracles and wonders and set himself up to be worshipped. President Obama is not a miracle-worker and has not required Christians to worship him. He does not fit the Bible’s perspective of the AntiChrist…

  5. no one, not even you know for sure if obama is the antichrist or not.so you saying he is not could be as bad as saying he is.you really don’t know. i know a few simple facts that may point to obama being the beast and they are easily verified. first in the bible it clearly says the bests number is 666. at the time obama was elected his chicago zip code was as follows.60606. no one knew how the number 666 could be tied to the beast.a lot of people thought it might be his birthdate ,and a bunch of other ways 666 could be connected to the beast. could be so simple as that obamas zip code being 60606 could of been what the bible meant? also the day after the election the chicago lotto pick 3 was 666. that same night the pick 4 was 7779. could this not also be signs from god trying to let us be ready for the rapture? i don’t even have to say all these number being tied to obama ,all at the same time is astronomical. only christians would look for these signs. i got to tell you i have a real gut feeling that obama is the antichrist.everything obama does is the opposite of good or right. he lies,he blasphemies god, he has turned is back on the jews. what other signs do you need? everyone needs to watch what obama does next. and be ready for the rapture. and most of all ,be right with god…..

    1. Thx for reading. The passage you’re talking about in Revelation says that the number of the beast is the number of a man and can be calculated. John had a specific individual in mind. Number codes were common in the ancient world, and names could be given numbers. Zip codes have nothing to do with it.

As for Obama I may not like his political stance. For his spirit its not for me to judge. We live in a nation of religious freedom. Respect him as president, don’t use religion as a base to dislike or hate someone.

  8. Nice twisting.
Here are some verses describing the “man of sin”, the “king of the north”, the “son of perdition”, or the “lawless one”. Antichrist is the “substitute” for the Messiah, whom liberals and the deceived masses have already proclaimed as Hussein Obama.

    Daniel 11:37
Neither shall he honor the gods of his fathers, nor the desire of women, neither shall he honor any so-called god; for he shall exalt himself above them all.

    Daniel 11:43
But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

    Daniel 8:25
And through his policy he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and in their’security shall he destroy many: he shall also stand up against the prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

    Daniel 11:21
And in his place shall stand up a contemptible person, to whom they had not given the honor of the kingdom: but he shall come in time of security, and shall obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

    Rev. 13:3
    And I saw one of his heads as though it had been smitten unto death; and his death-stroke was healed: and the whole earth wondered after the beast;

    Rev. 13:13
And he doeth great signs, that he should even make fire to come down out of heaven upon the earth in the sight of men.

    Daniel 7:20
And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.
    ( STOUT-meaning DARK)

    Daniel 11:38
But in his place shall he honor the god of fortresses; and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honor with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
    (PROTECTION-ISM)

So, can you name ONE leader than fits the descriptions given here?
If you do not understand or possibly wish to take them out of context, that’s your affair.
The truth will come out however, whether you choose to accept it or not.

  9. Hey, I don’t believe he’s the antichrist either. But to say that one person cannot run the world bringing it to a halt, I cannot say. Even though these are the end times with the antichrist spirit, it does say that the antichrist will be wounded. It also says that the antichrist will wage war with the two witnesses and finally to overthrow them. But there are two beast mentioned in Revelation very frequently. One for sure, I believe, is the internet itself. Only til’ now could one man have access to 1 billion people personal info and have all the knowledge on each information a man could need to do basically anything. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg; Facebook. If God could use one Man to save the world, why couldn’t Satan use one to destroy it? Something to think about, thanks to you. Keep writing and stay focused. God bless you.

    1. I don’t know if the beast in Revelation can be matched up to Paul’s “man of lawlessness” or John’s “spirit of antichrist” – I tend to read Revelation symbolically. Thx for reading and sharing!

  10. I recently wrote an eschatology post detailing how John alluded to Nero as the antichrist, though I am not sure if Nero is meant to be the only “man of lawlessness” or if he’s an archetype for a “Nero redivivus” to come. Anyway, I agree that fairly irreligious people make use of religious imagery to suit their political agendas. Most of these people could care less to see if there was any first-century context was implied in Revelation and, oftentimes, get quite furious at the suggestion because it ruins any legitimacy all their sinful slandering and gossip.

One thing I’ve always thought was funny about the “Left Behind” series is how no one seems to pick up on how the authors took a real dictator named Nicolae Ceausescu, who was pretty evil during his rule in Romania, and created their antichrist entirely from him.

    1. An excellent question! It seems that Paul and John did not dialogue before they wrote their letters for, while John views the spirit of antichrist alive in the world already, Paul does indeed seem to have a specific individual in mind.

Paul never gets specific, nor does the “man of lawlessness” have a reoccurring part of New Testament theology. It is possible that Paul had a specific person in mind (like Revelation’s “the number of the person is 666”).

To be honest, I haven’t figured out how the Pauline perspective jives with the Johannine, but I’ll look into it some more and write a follow up to you.

At any rate, Mr. Obama doesn’t fit the description of 2 Thessalonian’s Man of Lawlessness (setting himself up in the temple in place of God, signs and wonders, etc.). So my original position about Mr. Obama being the antichrist is still valid – he is not 🙂

    2. Here are some of the current theories advanced in an effort to identify the “man of lawlessness:

Pagan Mythology ~ Liberal theologians contend that Paul’s concept of the Man of Sin reflects a belief in ancient, pagan mythology —an idea that had been absorbed by the early Christians.

Satan Himself ~ Some have argued that the Man of Sin is Satan himself.

Principle of Evil ~ Some allege that no specific power or person(s) are in view. Rather, the apostle merely has personified a principle or idea of evil, which may appear in various forms in different historical periods as an opponent of truth. It may be manifest as Islam, Fascism, Communism, etc.

Judaism ~ Radical Preterists (those who contend that all Bible prophecy, including the Second Coming of Christ, was fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem) argue that the Man of Sin was the “hardened, militant Jews (Zealots in particular)”

A Roman Ruler ~ A popular idea contends that the Man of Sin is a Roman ruler —perhaps Nero Caesar.

The Future Anti-Christ ~ Millennialists (and some others) contend that the Man of Sin “is an individual embodying anti-God power who is still to arise before the future day of the Lord” (Mare, p. 1073). Hal Lindsey calls this hostile person “the Future Fuehrer.”

The Papacy ~ Some believe that the falling away is the Catholic Church from biblical faith and practice and that the man of lawlessness is the concept of the Papacy.
